28-Jul-09 - On Sunday, the CBC's Kevin Sylvester interviewed 1972 Democratic nominee George McGovern . McGovern is on a book tour to promote his Abraham Lincoln (The American Presidents Series: The 16th President, 1861-1865) --- Lincoln is his (and Barak Obama"s) greatest hero. The book is worth getting --- in 130 pages it will give you an idea of who, warts and all, the greatest U.S. president, the great emancipator, was --- and McGovern is a professional historian. There are striking similarities between Lincoln and Obama. McGovern was beaten by Richard Nixon by a landslide just before Watergate drove Nixon out of office. A member of the "greatest generation", McGovern was a World War Two Liberator pilot and war hero but he opposed the Vietnam and both Iraq wars. He wanted George Bush Junior, who was a draft dodger, impeached. But he respected George Bush Senior (another war hero) and his Secretary of State, James Baker. If Bush Junior had asked for their advice rather than for the advice of the "crowd of thugs and extremists led by Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld" --- McGovern believes that Bush Junior never would have invaded Iraq.

The 87-year-old McGovern and 86-year-old 1996 Republican presidential candidate and war hero Bob Dole devote most of their time to the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program which is run and administered by the U.S. Government.

"Due to hunger or malnutrition, an estimated 120 million school-age children around the world are not enrolled in school. The majority of these children are girls. The key objectives of the McGovern-Dole program are to reduce hunger and improve literacy and primary education, especially for girls. By providing school meals, teacher training, and related support, McGovern-Dole projects help boost school enrollment and academic performance. At the same time, nutrition programs are offered for pregnant and nursing women, infants, and pre-school youngsters to sustain and improve the health and learning capacity of children before they enter school."

McGovern says that the cost of providing a nutritious meal each day to each of these children and of providing a primary education for them would cost the U.S. less than it's military. Educated children, particularly girls, with full bellys, will reduce the birth rate in these countries by half and will bring the countries into the modern world in which it will be international terrorists, not innocent children who will be starved to death.
